UCSB Kiosk University Center room 1504 Santa Barbara, CA 93106 TELEPHONE (805) 893-8411 FAX (805) 893-7609

I wish I had known how helpful the workshops and services of CLAS were, and that I’d do better in my classes because of them.

I wish I had known to read the Kiosk before beginning classes and to use it as a resource for my college career.

I wish I had known that there are college advisors always ready to help me; I can make an appointment, just walk in, or call for advice.

I wish I had known that TAs can really help you understand the material and assignments.

I wish I had known that professors really DO want students to attend their office hours (and just saying “hi” is a fine reason to go).

I wish I had known how important it is to network with the many other re-entry/non-traditional students and their families at UCSB.

I wish I had known that the Graduate Student Lounge is a great place for students to relax and meet up with other graduate students.

I wish I had known that it is easy to meet other graduate students just by getting involved in campus clubs and organizations.

I wish I had known that the Women’s Center offers workshops to educate students on sexual harassment.

I wish I had known that psychologists at Counseling Services can help with anything (relationships, stress, homesickness, depression, etc.).

I wish I had known that if I was sick, Yellow Cab Co. would drive me to Student Health and bill my account.

I wish I had known about all the healthy, positive activities and events sponsored by the Wellness Program.

I wish I had known to check the After Dark Calendar on Thursdays in the Daily Nexus for weekend late night activities.

I wish I had known that the Alcohol and Drug Program offers free and confidential tobacco cessation counseling and education.

I wish I had known that NOT locking my bike/my room/my apartment was just asking for trouble.

I wish I had known how important communication was for making my roommate relationship successful.

I wish I had known how much I’d learn from people who are different than me.

I wish I had known that there are hundreds of clubs listed at the Office of Student Life.

I wish I had known how fulfilling it feels to be involved in a political campaign march.

I wish I had known how many great job skills (that I could put on my resume) I would learn from part-time jobs and internships.

I wish I had known that getting a part-time job helps pay unexpected bills and not all campus jobs are for work study students only.

I wish I had known that the annual deadline for financial aid applications (March 2) is much earlier than the deadline for taxes.

I wish I had known that small emergency loans are available through Financial Aid, Cashier’s Office, Alumni Association, OSL, and EOP.

I wish I had known that having a car makes you the one who is asked for rides or to borrow your car.

I wish I had known that the A.S. Bike Shop offers low-cost services and they will even show me how to fix my bike for free.

I wish I had known that there is such a thing as a BUI (Biking Under the Influence) and that it comes with a hefty fine.

I wish I had known about the Courtyard Café, located on the east side of campus near Engineering.

I wish I had known that it is important to get away from UCSB and take advantage of the many great events Santa Barbara has to offer.

Welcome

Welcome to the Kiosk, UC Santa Barbara’s official on-line student handbook.  Here you will find valuable information about campus resources, involvement opportunities, how to succeed as a college student, and so much more.

You are about to embark upon an exciting journey of academic, personal, and social growth; a journey that will see you try out new experiences, think about the world with a different perspective, and even discover abilities that you didn’t know you had.  The Kiosk is designed to assist students with understanding all the university has to offer to support you along this journey.

Based on the motto Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship, the Kiosk is divided into three sections.  In each section you can find out about student services, learn a little more about being a student at UCSB, and get information on a myriad of resources both on campus and in the surrounding community.

You are invited to explore the Kiosk as you begin your transition as a first year student and return to it as a resource for your time at UCSB as you create your own university experience.
