Questions & Answers about the UCSB Police Department

End of Navigation

Are they "real" cops?

Yes! Unlike many colleges that have security guards or night patrols with limited legal authority, UCSB has its own police department with the same police authority and responsibilities as any other police department in the state. Officers are trained under state guidelines and have state-wide jurisdiction, but generally limit their operations to University property and Isla Vista. Service units of the Department include Police, Community Service Organization (CSO), Rescue, Records, Communications, Lost and Found, and Administrative Support.

How can you find them?

UCSB's Police Department operates from two stations: the main station, located on campus just northeast of Harder Stadium, and the Isla Vista Foot Patrol Office, located 6504 Trigo Road in Isla Vista. The officers and deputies work as a team to protect the campus community. If a problem occurs on campus, see the officers at the main station. If the problem occurs in I.V., visit the Foot Patrol Office.

How can you reach the police FAST?

Call 911 for emergencies or immediate response 24 hours a day (9-911 from campus phones). For non-emergencies, call 893-3446 (on-campus and UCSB-owned property) or 681-4179 (in Isla Vista). For a CSO escort, call 893-2000.

If it's not an emergency, why would you want to call the police?

  • You can go on a ride-along with an officer.

  • You can set up a crime prevention program or police liaison for your residence hall, friends or neighbors.

  • You can get fingerprinted for your job.

  • You can report a crime that occurred previously.

  • You can ask about safety or inquire about the status of an earlier report.

What else should you know?

As the saying goes...the police really are your friends! They will help you whenever and wherever they can. They are here to enforce the laws too, and they appreciate your cooperation. As citizens of UCSB and Isla Vista, you have rights and responsibilities. Use them well and be safe.
