Doctoral Student Cubicles
A limited number of semi-secure cubicles are available to advanced doctoral students
in the Davidson Library (not available to Master's students and doctoral students

Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Computing Resources
Available primarily for students of the GGSE, the Gevirtz School's three computer
labs have Macintosh and PC computers, providing students with email and Internet
access; word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and web creation applications;
software training and support; qualitative and quantitative research analysis; videoconferencing;
OCR and image scanning; and still and video editing equipment. The Instructional/Research
Labs (Phelps 3525 and 3526) have posted hours of operation and are staffed by consultants
to assist students with equipment and software use. Ada's Lab (Phelps 1210) is a
24-hour, open-access, student-run computer lab with consultants on duty Monday through
Friday. A variety of equipment is available for short-term loan, including laptop
computers, storage devices, video and digital cameras, slide and digital projectors,

Graduate Book Lockers
Small book lockers are available to graduate and honors students in the Davidson

Graduate Diversity and Outreach Graduate Division Diversity and Outreach staff works
with undergraduates and graduates at UCSB and elsewhere to promote the University
and its commitment to a diverse student population. This is accomplished through
attendance at Graduate and Professional School fairs at colleges and universities,
professional student conferences, graduate preparation workshops, and other outreach
activities. Graduate Division serves as a liaison between prospective students and
departments, sharing important information with prospective students interested
in graduate programs at UCSB.
Graduate Division
The Graduate Division facilitates and coordinates graduate education and student
services for all graduate academic and professional programs at the University of
California, Santa Barbara. It is our goal to promote academic excellence in graduate
degree programs, to foster a diverse and inclusive graduate community of domestic
and international students, and to cultivate for all graduate students both an intellectually
challenging environment and a socially supportive climate.

implements academic preparation and recruiting programs to achieve a highly qualified
and diverse student body reflective of the State of California and the nation;
- provides information about and oversees central admission processes to all UCSB
graduate programs;

defined by the University of California and the Graduate Council of the UCSB Academic
Senate;
- encourages the development and success of students through workshops,
training activities, counseling, and initiatives which promote timely degree completion;
- seeks and administers internal and external funding sources for students and programs;
- administers UC and campus policies concerning graduate academic apprentice appointments;
- participates in the development and review of new and current graduate academic
programs;
- supports departmental initiatives to advise, train, and place UCSB graduate

Graduate Student Peer Advisors
UCSB graduate students, current and prospective, can take advantage of the expertise
and services provided by Graduate Peer Advisors (peers@graddiv.ucsb.edu) and Graduate
Diversity Interns (diversitypeers@graddiv.ucsb.edu). Both positions are sponsored
by the Graduate Division; Graduate Peer Advisors may be reached by calling 893-2277
or visiting the Graduate Division office at 3117 Cheadle Hall; Diversity Interns
are in 1215 Student Resource Building, 893-8994. Graduate Peer Advisors respond
to inquiries and host workshops about a variety of issues ranging from finding research
funding; completing master's theses and doctoral dissertations in a timely manner;
and taking advantage of professional development resources including academic and

The Graduate Diversity Interns, housed in 1215 Student Resource Building, assist
students in applying to graduate study and provide support services for current
UCSB graduate students through the development of workshops, training activities,
advising, and facilitation of mentorship relationships. Their work fosters an inclusive
and diverse community that promotes excellence and recognizes difference.

articles about graduate students and their research and graduate student services.
GeN also welcomes submissions from currently enrolled graduate students.
- The Graduate
Student Handbook is available on-line at www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/handbook
It provides a summary of policies and procedures affecting graduate students, and
other useful information.
- The UCSB Guide to Filing Theses and Dissertations provides
guidance to graduate students who are preparing to file either a thesis or dissertation.

- To Survive
and Flourish: A Survival Guide for Graduate Women at UCSB, written and produced
by the UCSB Graduate Women's Network; free and available at the Women's Center,
Graduate Students Association, MultiCultural Center, graduate student orientation,
and TA orientation. This comprehensive guide deals with a wide variety of issues
that affect graduate women. The guide provides information on topics such as networking,
academic life, stress, sexual harassment, advising and mentoring, the job search,
and more. Recommended for all graduate students.
Graduate Student Housing
New graduate students who apply on time are guaranteed a space in the San Clemente
Apartments. This complex is comprised of two and four bedroom apartments housing
972 graduate students, each in their own room. This new facility includes water,
trash, gas, electric, cable television and wireless internet. For more information

Graduate Student Mentors
Mentors are available for one-on-one appointments to coach graduate students in
finding solutions, making referrals as appropriate. Both Grad Mentors are full-time
professional staff with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Additionally, graduate students
working as Teaching Assistants can utilize the Student Mentor Team for assistance
with referring students to appropriate campus resources. (For students with serious
psychological problems, contact Angela Andrade in the Office of Student Life, 893-8920).

Graduate U-Mail Accounts
U-Mail is the official student e-mail service used by instructors and University
Administration. All students are required to activate and maintain a U-Mail account
for the duration of their academic career at UCSB. U-Mail provides a number of flexible
options for e-mail access, including both desktop and webmail interfaces. Alternately,
you can forward your U-Mail account to your preferred e-mail service provider. Activate

Research and Career Support
The Graduate Division assists graduate students in the research of sources of student
research support, conducts workshops to help students in generating effective extramural
research proposals, and provides career development activities and information for
graduate students interested in commencing job searches.
