I wish I had known that if I was sick Yellow Cab Co. would drive me to Student Health and bill my BA/RC account.

Student Health provides health care to all registered students regardless of their insurance coverage. We are a primary care facility with limited specialties. Referrals to the community are provided whenever it is necessary. We are located on campus across from the Events Center-halfway between the residence halls and Isla Vista. In addition to medical services, educational services (see Educational Services below) are provided to help students become healthy and stay healthy. We are open year round Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 8am to 4:30pm, Wednesday from 9am to 4:30pm and Thursday from 8am to 7pm with limited services from 12-1pm. You may access our web site at http://studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu/ for current health information, after hours and emergency care, a chance to meet our staff practitioners, insurance information, and student opportunities to become involved at Student Health.

  • Two one-hour sessions in physical therapy for exercise

  • One one-hour session for information/question answer/problem solving/support with a nutritionist or nurse practitioner At the end students will meet once again with the doctor or nurse practitioner, the dietitian, and the physical therapist to evaluate what changes they've made physically and behaviorally. Healthy Eating And Living (HEAL) Interns trained through our academic classes offer presentations about healthy eating on the run and coping with pressure to be thin. Individual appointments with our registered dietitians are available and are always confidential. For an appointment call 893-3371.

SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan)

The UC Regents require all registered students to be covered by major medical health insurance while attending school. Students are automatically enrolled in SHIP unless they complete an online waiver form and provide proof of comparable coverage. One requirement of waiving out of the University-sponsored insurance is that a student must have a primary care provider within 25-miles of the campus. This is not the same as emergency care, which is included in most plans. Some plans do not have primary care providers within this radius so they do not qualify to waive. Please read the information carefully on the waiver website (www.sa.ucsb.edu/studenthealth/insurance). The waiver form must be submitted each year by the specified deadline. Unless a waiver is granted, students are charged a health insurance fee as part of their registration. SHIP provides a complete health care package when combined with the services available through Student Health, located on campus. In addition, SHIP is portable, meaning that students receive excellent coverage whether they are on campus, at home or traveling. For further information, call Student Health at 893-2592 to speak with an insurance advisor.

Payment Plan for Non-SHIP Members

PATH (Prepaid Access To HealthCare) is an alternative method to pay for health services if you are not already enrolled in SHIP. Rather than paying for each visit, students can pre-pay their fees. You can see a practitioner and utilize the lab or x-ray as many times as needed without paying the visit or processing fees. By prepaying for services, you can maximize preventive care and access treatment by minimizing financial barriers. The process to enroll in PATH is a simple matter of answering yes at the end of the online waiver request. For students on financial aid, monies are allocated for health care and can be applied to PATH. For more information, call 893-8141.
